Rochelle Park, New Jersey

Its identity mixes established residential neighborhoods, the Route 17 business corridor, local recreation, county social-service institutions and a long history that predates the modern township name.

From Midland Township to Rochelle Park

The municipality's history is considerably older than the Rochelle Park name and includes Native American settlement, Dutch colonial activity, agriculture, railroads and the breakup of the much larger Midland Township.

Pre-colonialEarly settlement

Archaeological evidence near the Saddle River/Sprout Brook area points to seasonal human activity thousands of years ago; the region later formed part of Lenape territory.

1871Midland Township

New Jersey created Midland Township from part of New Barbadoes Township; it became effective April 3, 1871 and originally covered a much larger area.

1894Borough-era breakup

River Edge, Oradell, Maywood and the Cherry Hill/Fairmount area separated, leaving Paramus and the Rochelle Park area within Midland Township.

1929Rochelle Park

The municipality adopted the Rochelle Park name, avoiding confusion with nearby Midland Park. The name is associated with La Rochelle, France.

Transportation history: Rochelle Park once had a railroad depot, and a trolley line crossed Midland Township by the 1890s. The retained station image on this page reflects that history rather than current passenger-rail service.
